Since 2008, the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) has united over 180,000 energy players from 80+ countries to address the significant energy issues influencing the industry. In 2020, SIEW took a groundbreaking approach, conducting both physical and virtual sessions for the first time due to global pandemic restrictions. Despite the format shift, the unwavering spirit of SIEW remained intact, fostering collaboration and generating innovative ideas and solutions that can inspire the world.

SIEW 2020 became Singapore’s pioneer pilot event, welcoming up to 250 participants amidst the global pandemic. This marked a significant milestone in the gradual and safe resumption of economic activities. The hybrid format of SIEW combined live in-person sessions with online streaming elements, enabling a global audience to participate in a week-long series of discussions centered around the theme “Creating our Low Carbon Energy Future Together.”

Bilateral Agreements – SIEW 2020 Highlights

Australia and Singapore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Low-Emissions Solutions to collaborate and advance efforts in adopting sustainable and low-emissions solutions in the energy sector.

Another MoU was established between Australia and Malaysia’s Energy Commission to reinforce bilateral cooperation in the energy industry, aiming to foster shared initiatives for greater energy efficiency and sustainability.

Singapore also joined hands with Hong Kong, China’s Electrical and Mechanical Services Department through a MoU to strengthen cooperation in the energy domain, with a particular focus on enhancing energy security and resilience.

Furthermore, a Joint Statement of Intent was made to cooperate with the Gas and Electricity Markets Authority (GEMA) in the United Kingdom. This statement signifies a commitment to collaborate and share knowledge in order to facilitate advancements in the gas and electricity markets.

These partnerships and agreements reflect a collective effort among countries to address energy challenges, promote sustainable practices, and bolster energy security on a global scale.

Youth@SIEW

During the event, Ms. Low Yen Ling, Minister of State for the Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Culture, Community, and Youth, emphasized the importance of the energy industry adapting to new learning methods and embracing innovative business models. She also encouraged young individuals to actively participate in Singapore’s energy transformation.

The Youth@SIEW program highlighted a virtual Youth Energy Showcase, where students showcased their innovative energy projects aimed at promoting sustainability within the energy sector. Additionally, Ms. Low presented the prestigious Energy-Industry Scholarship awards to deserving recipients, recognizing their potential to contribute and excel in the Power sector while fostering talent development.

SIEW Energy Showcase

Sembcorp Industries and the Energy Research Institute @ NTU have been jointly awarded a grant by the Energy Market Authority to develop Singapore’s pioneering Virtual Power Plant (VPP). By leveraging real-time data from various Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), the VPP will optimize power output across the entire island of Singapore.

The Shell StartUp Engine is a global innovation program aimed at empowering energy start-ups to enhance their capabilities and foster business growth in the smart and clean energy domain.

Supported by the National Research Foundation Singapore, the Singapore Battery Consortium facilitates strategic R&D partnerships between public research performers and industry players to establish Singapore as a leading authority in battery-related technologies.
